We recently returned from an impromptu weekend getaway on Bald Head Island, off the North Carolina coast near Wilmington. The minute we stepped on the ferry, it felt a little like Disneyland…everything is clean, efficient, and the people so friendly! Since there are no cars are allowed on the island a tram tranfered us, along with luggage and coolers, from the harbor to our rental house, where two golf carts awaited. The peacefulness of the island immediately enveloped us, and there was nothing to do but explore the beaches and the untamed marshland. But I have to admit, those golf carts are fun…we were fighting over who got to drive to the grocery store, and again I felt like I was on Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride! Of course, you could golf and play tennis if you wanted, but we preferred to play in the waves with our puppy, who met lots of other friends there, as it is a very dog friendly beach. Mary Munroe was helpful and accommodating, giving us much more flexibility on our arrival and departure times than we expected, and the house in Surfman’s Walk was perfect for 3 couples or a family of 5 or 6. We grilled on the porch every evening, and were a 5 minute cart ride from the beach. What can I say…we hated to leave.
